It’s so important for children to have a safe environment, both at home and at school. In Kalundborg Municipality we offer a wide range of schools, pre-school facilities and extracurricular activities with room for everybody.
Denmark has a policy of 10 years' compulsory education and children start school in August of the year they turn six. The first year is a pre-school class followed by nine years in primary and lower secondary education. They are usually around 15-16 years old when they finish and can then choose between a number of general or vocational upper secondary education programs.
Public schooling in Denmark is free. However, if you choose to send your child to a private or independent school, you’re generally required to pay tuition.
Public schools
To ensure your child gets the best possible start, they will be invited for at screening meeting as a part of the enrollment process if they have little to no knowledge of the Danish language. This meeting will uncover your child's needs, skills and language abilities and guide whether your child is enrolled in a regular class or in a reception class with language support before continuing to a regular class.
In Denmark children start school the year they turn 6. The enrollment to pre-school activities (Forårs SFO) and grade zero must be done online in November the year before. If you need to enroll your child outside of this period, please contact the Department of Children and Youth.
Please note, your child does not need to have a CPR number to start the enrollment process. However, you need to have an address in Kalundborg municipality.
